Orthotropics

Orthotropics and Orthodontics

The Avis Alternative practice goal for ortho treatment is quite simply

 WELLNESS!

Yes, my patients will have straight teeth and broad smiles, but more importantly, they will have better airways to facilitate more optimal breathing.

Orthotropics, fixed braces, removable appliances (Expanders, Sagittal, Crozat) and Invisalign are techniques that I use to accomplish better airway, improved profiles and beautiful smiles for our patients. Based on patient examination and assessment, the best approach for each individual is chosen.

Myofunctional therapy is a central part of our Ortho approach. Oral posture is the cause of malocclusion. By malocclusion, I include crooked, rotated and crowded teeth, improper overjet and overbite, cross bites, missing teeth (from birth or prior ortho), TMD and straight teeth back too far in the face.

OMFT (Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy) teaches therapeutic exercises to help patients develop proper oral posture. This training includes exercises to improve muscle tone of the facial and cervical musculature and development of new neuromuscular connections. Patients learn and train proper postural and functional habit patterns to replace dysfunctional habit patterns. Common dysfunctional habit patterns include mouth breathing, reverse swallow, tongue thrust, low resting tongue posture, nail biting, thumb sucking, cheek and lip biting, hair pulling and others.

Resting oral posture must be corrected for the optimal wellness benefits to be achieved from Ortho treatment. As it is the cause of unhealthy and displeasing aesthetic profiles, malocclusion and orthodontic relapse, proper rest oral posture is critically important.

Inter-disciplinary care is always considered as part of our Wellness approach to straight teeth. Can the patient breathe through his/her nose? Are the tongue and lips restricted by "ties"? Is a diet high in processed foods or are food allergies and sensitivities contributing to problems with chronic over breathing, caries, gum disease, congestion and reflux? Are fatigue and focus a result of inadequate airway or breathing disordered sleep? Referrals to nutritionists, ENTs, osteopaths, naturopaths, speech therapists and physicians will be made accordingly. Malocclusion is a sign and symptom of underlying dysfunction. Yes we will help you to a beautiful smile, but more importantly we are determined to facilitate your increased well-being.

Finally, while I believe wellness is your journey, your lifestyle choice and your personal decision, we feel the responsibility, as your chosen doctor and team, to help you along on this path.
